The Case for Custom Software

There's a real appeal to replacing a homegrown system with a large enterprise SaaS solution: it shifts some risk off the business, and it comes wrapped in the promise of "best practices" you don't have to work out yourself.

But that risk shift comes with a catch. Enterprise SaaS solutions rarely fit a business's actual processes out of the box — so you either reshape how you work to match the software, or you pay to reshape the software to match how you work: customization, integrations, and very often a dedicated administrator or developer just to keep it configured. Either way, you're still paying someone to make the tool fit the business. That's not the absence of custom software — it's custom software with a subscription on top.

I'd rather build something sized to what the business actually needs: no per-seat licensing, no bloat from features built for someone else's company, no platform-specific administrator to hire and retain. Done well, custom software isn't the bigger risk — it's often the more honest version of the same investment.
